Pinwheels for Peace

September 21st is International Peace Day. Dyer and Kaler schools will both be recognizing this day by participating in Pinwheels for Peace. The students in both schools are making pinwheels in art class that will "planted" outside during assemblies. The students at Dyer school got started making their pinwheels this week. Kaler will start their pinwheels next week.

I read Todd Parr's The Peace Book to the classes and had them visualize what Peace means to them.

The 2nd through 5th graders wrote the sentence "Peace is__________" and then filled in the blank with a personal message of the meaning of peace. Kindergarteners and 1st graders practiced writing the word peace.

On the front side of the pinwheel, students used oil pastels in groups of analogous colors (aka "rainbow friends, colors that are next to each other in the rainbow or color wheel) to fill the space with bright-vibrant colors.
