School-Wide Self Portrait/Peace Project

Students at Dyer and Kaler created flags inspired by the Literatura de Cordel of Brazil.  The front of each flag depicts a self-portrait drawn and printed by each student. On the back of the flag students glued a piece of writing about the meaning of Peace.

Students first drew self-portraits in scratch-foam (similar to a styrofoam meat tray).

Each student rolled black ink over the self-portrait using a brayer and then printed onto his/her choice of brightly colored paper.

The ELL teachers and classroom teachers collaborated to assist students in brainstorming the meaning of Peace. K students practiced writing the word PEACE. Grades 1 & 2 filled in the sentence: "Peace is......." and grades 3-5 wrote about personal hopes/dreams for world peace.

All of the flags were clipped/taped to twine and many fabulous teachers/staff helped to hang them up for display.

The flags are now hanging down the main hallway at Kaler:

and in the front entryway at Dyer:
